First Itch Devlog!

Hello Itch.io, I’m curlyfries709 and I’m kicking off my career as an indie game dev with my first project ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me!

It’s a silly little comedy horror game inspired by the Tv Series “Scream Queens” and “Scary movie” franchise, particularly films 1 & 2.

I’ve been on quite the journey to make this game happen. But I’m happy that I’m finally working on it and I’m happy that I’m doing what I love: making games.

How did this project come about?

Well, it all started around a year ago; I just freshly graduated from uni….lol just kidding. I had just freshly dropped out of uni after a year and decided to pursue my dreams of developing games.

After a few months of battling depression, I finally found the motivation to make my dream a reality and began working on a game script of a game idea that’s been swimming around my mind for years.

I thought “Yeah, this game is awesome! People are gonna love the characters and the twist. The environments are going to be incredible!”. Then, 200 pages later, I realized “Well, shit, how the fuck I’m I gonna develop this game myself?!” and that wasn’t even the game’s script…it was the outline of the script! Despite not knowing how this game was actually going to get made, I continued writing the script: an Open world action RPG with branching narrative inspired by games like The Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquistion; Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Persona 5.

It’s a massive game with decisions that alter your playthrough; numerous romance options all with their unique bonus scenes; multiple routes and multiple endings.

Currently the script stands at over 1300 pages, and I’m not even done yet. It’s my dream game. It’s the game that makes me want to succeed in my pursuit of becoming an indie game developer because I need to make this game, I owe it to all the characters that I’ve fallen in love with while writing that project.

Basically, it would mean the world to me to actually make that game a reality. That’s why I’m doing everything in my power to make it happen.

But how I’m I going to make it happen?

Well, if I want to bring that game into existence, I’m going to need a team and funding. Therefore, I created a plan.

My plan is to commence my journey as a game developer by building small projects that I can handle alone which, I’m hoping, will help me grow an audience.

By growing an audience, I can network with talented concept artists, 3D Modelers, animators, level designers, etc to establish a team. Finally with a team, and funds, via crowdfunding which is also another reason why I need to grow an audience, I will be able to make my dream game happen.

So, with that plan in mind, I decided that Who Killed The Dinner? another one of my many game ideas would be the first game I develop. It’s a much smaller project that I can handle alone.

I began working on the demo and that demo is…you guessed it: ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me!

ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me!

How does ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me and Who Killed The Dinner? Correlate?

Well, ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me is actually meant to be a prologue of Who Killed The Dinner? It’s how the latter game begins.

However, being the imaginative and ambitious person that I am, when developing ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me!, I got carried away and the project became bigger than I initially planned. Now it’s at a point where it can even be considered as its own standalone game. Not even a demo.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It just means the development of the game took way longer than necessary. Though, I don’t regret it. ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me! is meant to showcase the potential of Who Killed The Dinner?

So, if people like that game, just imagine how awesome it’d be with more playable characters, a bigger story, crazier environment and bigger budget. That’s what Who Killed The Dinner? will be. And if people keep that in mind, it’ll further pique their interest of the main game.

A lot of the features such as Crafting, Combat finishers, Combat combos, mini-stories, and multiples ending were not initially planned for the demo. But I decided to implement them. It’s better that players get to experience it for themselves rather than me saying those features will be in the main game that might not even get made.

Plus, this is my first game, so I’m challenging myself as a programmer to implement these various features.

Conclusion

Anyway, that’s the backstory behind this game. If all goes well, I will begin developing Chapter 1 of Who Killed The Dinner? once ARGHH, there’s a killer chasing me! is complete. I also plan to release a sandbox level of Who Killed The Dinner? for people to playtest the enemy AI.

Though, before all of that, I’ll likely release some other demos for other game ideas I have. I feel like working on something fresh as I’ve been working on this current project full-time for around 5 months.

Honestly, I didn’t intend to write a whole ass article, but having my first devlog for my first game be a short unimportant post felt weird. So, I decided to open up a bit.

If you made it this far, here’s a virtual cookie! And if you liked this post, you may like this other post I wrote on my blog about the inspiration and features behind my first game.
